People used to tell me that I had to be careful not to break an arm because if I did I would never be able to talk. “Sit on your hands!” didn’t work. Some people are just wired that way. It’s not just a habit or a ‘cultural’ thing. The only thing that works is if I am doing something ‘automatic’ with my hands—like knitting, throwing pottery, washing dishes. But my speech slows down to keep pace with my hand movements.
