As a Yank living overseas, I’ve adopted three rules of thumb for NOT being an Ugly American…
1. Never argue. Even if you’re right, you won’t win.
2. Bite your tongue and smile, even if it’s unwarranted.
3. Be accepting (not critical) of cultural difference.
Bottom line: “Their country, their rules.” Being low-key and positive has worked well for me, especially as a single guy in a nation full of sweet, gorgeous women.
As for Gwen Berry, she finished THIRD in the U.S. Trials. I don’t think she’ll be on the stand in Tokyo.
The United States of America, being the leader of the free world, should win the Gold in Freedom of Speech thanks to our constitution, and in spite of conservatives who never did get it.
