There are many useful knots, mountain climbers get to know some very interesting ones. When you are dangling at the end of your rope, it is comforting to know your bowline is properly tied.
Anyone remember the novel “The Shipping News” by Annie Proulx? At the head of every chapter is an illustration and description of a different knot from “The Ashley Book of Knots.” They are amazing! I don’t remember seeing Bub’s knot in there, though, lol.

Try splicing. I did that once, many years ago. It’s moderately difficult, very satisfying, and I would not want to do it for a living.
