This reminded me of a true story many, many years ago. I used to go to my boss and tell him, “I was thinking …”. He would then cut me off and say, “Stop it, everytime you think, we get in trouble”. Then he would laugh. One time we had a big problem, when we finally solved it, the answer was a very simple solution. Boss comes to me and said, “Why didn’t you think of that”. My response? “You told me to stop thinking”.
Even in government work we had a lot of “think outside the box”, “be creative”, and “take advantage of unexpected opportunities”, etc. etc. But along with those the underlying unspoken message was “just don’t be wrong” or “don’t screw up and make us [me] look bad”.".
