It’s the result of billions of years of hard work by the true Masters Of The Universe – the methanogenic archaea. It took them a very long time to construct the ultimate vessels in which to live (“mammals”), with food-gathering and processing hardware (“mouths” and “stomachs” and “intestines”).
With billions of those self-propelled homes now in service, we’ve reached the moment at which the archaea have decided to celebrate.
Don’t expect fireworks, though. They don’t use them.
Just expect an an impressive sequence of long, sour farts.
