Being more responsible, more committed and more careful with life choices is a lot to ask for in one year. Being/staying married is a lot to ask for in a lifetime. Mamet should work on the first three one at a time, one year at a time. Once he does that, he will be ready for the marriage thing.
Also it helps to be personally motivated, and not to make changes for the sole reason being that others want you to make them.
