Even the dumbest dog learns pretty quickly that it’s not wise to stick your nose under the coach where the cat is hiding. Wouldn’t this yield the same result?
Reminds me of my Golden. We have many chipmunks, moles, squirrels, and other “rodents” in our country yard. I have seen my dog stick his head down into these holes way past his ears.

Actually for them they are lucky they aren’t the ground floor. Louie won’t eat them, but if they were on the ground floor a hungry snake would.
