    His book, “Home Country,” about his travels around the US in the 30s is also an excellent read.

    Ernie Pyle thought the stories of the guys fighting the war at the front were important. So important, that when he could have rested, and remained at home after leaving the European Theater, he went off to the Pacific. He knew he might not come back alive.

    My wife and I were wandering around the Pacific War Memorial at the Punchbowl in Honolulu, and I was startled to see his grave marker. Not really different from most, which I am sure would have pleased him.
