“Uphill both ways, blazing hot except when it was bitter cold, mud to our knees, snow to our necks, and if there was a tornado we just got there faster!”
Walked until I bought a bicycle everyday except when it rained. Turned out the walk was not nearly as long as I thought as a child. What a disappointment – it was only .7 mile, but it was down and then uphill each way.
I hate to admit this (kinda breaks the grandfather rule) but in 1st grade I used to get up at 7:45 to make it to school by 8:05 (in any weather) … cuz the elementary school was directly across the street.
I couldn’t believe how far a walked when I was in high school until I came back on leave and drove the route. The old tale old folks tell was true, except for the uphill both ways.
A different kettle of fish Ben, we walked to school, had crossing guards on the corners and in the school lots too. Much better time and education too along with good teachers!

I also walked to school. Down a flight of stairs every morning and back up at 3:30. And we never got off for snow days!

For me it was standing in the snow, in a dress (girls were not allowed to wear pants to school) waiting for the school bus.

Max is listening again. He likes stories about snow but not rain. : )
