There should have been some Black Panther comics, he has been around for a while. And Black Lightning too.

Milestone Comics was created in 1993 specifically to provide black creators with a venue to write and publish their own works. Prominent characters created by Milestone included teen hero Static Shock, who would go on to have his own animated series.

Sadly, they made the mistake of going through DC to actually publish. DC eventually absorbed Milestone, and when that happened most of Milestone’s characters went right into the vault.

Static has come back a few times, but his most recent incarnation was basically an insult to everything Milestone once stood for.

I’ve been going to Kickstarter to get comics written and starring Blacks. I may be white, but I thoroughly enjoy comics and stories from cultures other than European. Drove me nuts as a kid because I dearly loved Folk and Fairy tales, but all I could find was European and American based tales. True, some American tales did include John Henry, and Brer Rabbit and others, but they were rare. I did manage to find some collected tales from China and Japan, and occasionally Native American based stories, but the lack of tales from around the world really bothered me. I think that’s why I dove headfirst into Science Fiction. To see my world from a new perspective. I’m so glad Rick Riordan is sponsoring ‘Rick Riordan Presents’ which is publishing tales by authors from other cultures that covers their myths, folk and fairy tales. It is enlightening to see the world through new eyes and the tales they tell are intriguing and addictive. When I finish reading them, I gift them to my young nephew to expand his horizons.
