Actually, the Earth was not farther away from the Sun. The Earth is tilted so that the southern hemisphere is getting more direct rays than the northern this time of year. That’s why it’s summer in Australia when it’s winter in the U.S.

Alright…somebody explain to the engineer how we’re moving in 5 (maybe 6) directions. I’ve been trained to see life in Cartesian space, so there are three directions to me, X Y and Z. However, my motion (instantaneous velocity vector) is just in one direction, which is some combination of those three, depending on how you define the coordinate frame. Many things contribute to my personal velocity: the rotation of the earth, the orbit of the earth around the sun, the orbit of the sun around the center of the galaxy, the motion of the galaxy itself, etc; but all of that resolves into one resultant velocity vector, which (currently) is approximately that way –>
God Bless you Tenaciousr! I couldn’t have said it better myself! As for geo111, there is a “Geo-thermal” warm place waiting for you if you don’t wake up and realize the Truth of the Gospel!
wndrwrthg says:
While remaining motionless, how many directions (ways) are you moving? I count five, I’ve heard there are six.
There are six and they are as follows:
Universal Expansion
Rotation of the Galaxy (Milky Way)
Rotation of the Solar System
Rotation of the Earth
Earth orbit
Contental plate Tectonics
although HINTZY is correct all of this motion places us on a terminal vector of ONE not-so-constant direction
Universal Expansion (inflation)
Rotation of the Galaxy (abt supercluster)
Rotation of the Solar System (abt galaxy)
Rotation of the Earth (abt its axis)
Earth orbit (abt sun)
Contental plate Tectonics
there are also:
Axis progression of the earth (wobble)
drift towards Andromeda (gravity)
motion of supercluster towards great attractor
To Silver pearl: When Greenland becomes green, mankind will have become extinct.
To Gweedo: Climate is doing fine. Mankind just won’t be doing well with the climate.
To tenacious: people are reluctant to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ (sic) because they now live in the 21st century.
Both of you are correct, which reminds us that Calvin’s dad is yet again filling his impressionable mind with erroneous information, something that is a recurring theme in C&H (Calvin came from Kmart, the world was black and white until the technicolor revolution, etc.). I like this one because it’s more subtle.

Actually, Calvin’s Dad is correct. The sun is cooling, hence, going out. I heard somewhere that the sun has cooled like 2 or 3 degrees over the last 50 years. WHO CARES!?!?!
In all truthfulness…there are a few of you to whom the 4th panel applies! There are a few others who would be better served to upgrade your spelling abilities rather than reading and commenting on comic strips.
Hugh-how can you be “moving closer to God” with your user name? See Leviticus 18! Or do you REALLY think that rational women would be attracted to that?! Just asking…

On the next to last day of our trip we emerge from our hut on the north side of Kiatak Island. Jens and Mamarut are boyishly cheerful, despite the disappointment of having no meat to bring home. They race each other up a steep snowfield. Because Kiatak lies farther west than any other land in Greenland, they’re sure that, looking out over Baffin Bay toward Ellesmere Island, they’ll see an ice edge sturdy enough to hold their dog-sleds. This is where the walruses will be.
What they see astonishes them: There’s no ice edge, only the glitter of open water all the way to Canada. Jens blinks, looks away to one side, then back out at the sea.
“In my whole life, and that of my father and grandfather, there has never been anything like this at this time of year. Without ice, we can’t live. Without ice, we’re nothing at all.”
Guys, my personal opinion is that the world is very drab when there is no complaining going on. So I want all of you to complain to your hearts content without paying any heed to the facts.
I can’t believe I didn’t get this when it was first published. Winter doesn’t happen because the Earth is further from the Sun. In fact, January 3rd is perihelion. It’s the Earth’s axial tilt that makes winter.
ahhh this is a forum for the comic but none of you seem to be talking about it. Get back to the comic because I enjoy reading peoples opions about the comic just not all the other dribble you’ve been talking about today. Your ruining this forum. I read it for your funny, interesting comic views, not for how many directions we move when standing still. Go find somewhere else to talk about that stuff.
That is how the Earth does in solar system. Itself moves/tilts a little bit and stay vertically for four seasons. Mother Nature does the works on our planet, Earth!
God created everything than we know.
So much for Spaceman Spiff. I thought for sure we would see him in today’s strip.
I am positive he would be able answer all your questions about the number of directions were traveling.
Actually there is one other direction that we are moving. It is very slight but nevertheless it is real. The earth not only rotates on its axis but it also has a wobble.
Wildmustang 1262-Very true. But if you believe in God, you must realize that there is no “Mother Nature”. It is all by God’s grace! BTW God even created Darwin, just so He could see if we’re paying attention to His teachings! Genesis 1
