Chaucer mentions a pet door in The Miller’s Tale, written in the 1300’s. There is a phony idea that Isaac Newton invented it, but the Chaucer reference predates him by about two centuries. The Newton story conveniently conflates having a pet door with inventing it.

I wonder why the ghost dog is wearing a sheet with holes cut for the eyes? Maybe he got hit by a car on Halloween?
