Technically, in Europe, “dinner” used to be closer to lunch time, and “supper” was later in the evening, often after returning from a ball or the theaters, as late at 1 AM. One “dined” during the day, and “supped” at night. We need to add “dupper” and “sipper” in there somewhere. “Sipper” involves more whiskey.
We had an argument at work one time about the difference between lunch, dinner and supper so looked it up in our Funk & Wagnalls. If the evening meal is the main one then it’s called dinner and the noon one, lunch. If the noon meal is the main one then it’s called dinner and the evening one, supper. Funny how you can go thru most of your life and not know that.
