So the guy is coming in the bathroom door, but where is the doorway, the walls around the swinging door? Unless the entrance to the bathroom is also a stall door (which means people walking down the hall can see into the locker room), how can this be? Is it just me, or did anyone else notice that?
I’m guessing the reaper just finished his sporting event and it ended in sudden death. His friend was at death’s door (which might explain why it’s barely holding on). The reaper probably caught his death of cold because the wall around death’s door was missing. Once he gets his robe back on, he’ll feel like death warmed over. Make no bones about it. That’s what going on here.
Oh, I’ve never heard the phrase, “It smells like death in here”. I’ve heard, “It smells like hell in here” or “It smells like sh*t in here” or “It smells like bleeep in here” or “It smells like someone died in here”, but NEVER “It smells like death in here”. (then again, I’m not a mortician). I think the cartoonist meant to say, “It smells like someone died in here”. That would make sense.
No, I think the cartoonist is correct. I say that all the time, even though I don’t exactly know what death smells like. I assume it smells pretty bad though considering what it does to someone’s body…

When I read this cartoon, the phrase didn’t sound familiar to me . You could type just about ANY sentence in google and get a lot of hits.
For example..”It smells like MOLD in here” of” It smells like DOG in here” receive similar or more hits on Google. That doesn’t make them well-known or more often used phrases like, ” something died in here.” (that’s the phrase I meant to say above)…. “smells like death in here” received over 8 million.
People may use both, but, by far, the most well-known and used idiomatic phrase is “something died in here.”
Fact is “something died in here” IS a well-known phrase AND it works better on this cartoon. Over 65 million hits.
Since the “Grim Reaper” is sometimes referred to as “Death”, why wouldn’t “it really smells like death in here” be superior to “something died in here” ? Or are you just missing the Reaper’s garb hanging in the locker room?
(I didn’t know his real is Russell…you learn something new every day!)

aerdroppings, you’re quite the punster. A few friends and I have regular pun wars. Perhaps you could join us!
The game ended in sudden death? Sounds perfectly heart-stopping!

People - you need to realize that both eardroppings and MrNavyBean have secret identities, much like Superman and Batman. They have FUN doing this.
LibrarianInTraining over 15 years ago
jtpozenel, I believe Russell is the man in the stall with his trousers down.

Ji2m… Brilliant line. Really. I for one am impressed with people who possess such a grasp of the English language.
Ushindi Here’s a secret: no one on this site uses their real names.

I think you’re missing the point of the Reapers garb hanging outside of the stall. That’s him in there. Otherwise, what’s the point of the visual?
MisngNOLA over 15 years ago
If you look closely, you’ll see “Death” reaching from the showers to grab his robe. Russell is the guy in the stall, Death is finishing his shower.

What? People ARE using their real names? Your response above insinuates I said something that wasn’t true.
