Perhaps arthritic hands/fingers inspired it… along with the lack of waste that comes with a gift bag as opposed to wrapping.. Pluggers are a product of the Post Depression era and know well the skill of saving. Old habits die hard for most.
Years ago, my uncle’s gift bags were paper grocery bags, staple them shut and attach a bow, plenty of room to write a “TO” name on them but didn’t have to “From”
And.. we are eternally grateful. My only problem is to keep track of who the bag came from so it doesn’t get regifted back to the original sender the next year. I just think that’s tacky.
As I Plugger, I figure why waste money on wrapping paper or gift bags. They all get ripped up and/or thrown out. I just tape the end of the store bag closed, put a tag on it and call it good. Merry Christmas.
While we may have invented them for emergency use or for arthritic hands, most of us get the joy of watching the family rip open the paper wrap on Christmas and other Birthdays too….
I’ll use a gift bag as a last resort, if wrapping paper is running out, or there is no good way to wrap something. Sometimes though, it’s fun to use cardboard tubes and odd-shaped cartons to disguise what is wrapped up inside.
Our first Christmas together, hubby and I thought it was a cute idea to let our dogs open a couple of their wrapped doggy presents early. (It was cute, watching them tear into the paper and find a treat or chew toy). However, we returned home one evening to find that ALL the presents under the tree had been torn open! From then on, all the presents resided on a table in the living room.

I love gift bags. I never acquired the skillset to do wrapping the slick, professional way. ;D

A large brown grocery bag with a single cash card-wrapped in the store’s circular. Done… and still single.

Luv this. And you can use the bags for regifting if you don’t write on the tag.

Every now and then I’ll use the Sunday newspaper comics section to wrap a gift, seems to go over well but I like the simplicity of the gift bag.
