If you think that modern life makes communication a chore, just imagine what kind of chore it was back in western pioneer days with communication being done by pony express riders having to ride through deserts and unfriendly Indian territory!
That old friend Fritzi ghosted was non other than Phil Fumble. Modern life made Fritzi so overwhelmed and exhausted, she accidentally stopped communicating with her boyfriend, as well as the man she married at the end of the Gilchrist era.
I actually had a friend get mad at me because she could see the “read-receipt” and since I didn’t respond immediately, she gave me an attitude. Our convo wasn’t an emergency, it was just a friendly back and forth about life and work, but she expected me to reply right after I read her last message. I had to let her know that I respond when I feel like it, not when someone dictates my own time management to me. I try to turn off those read-receipts on devices and programs that allow it because they are super annoying and imo, intrusive.
The only time I’ve appreciated that feature was for work when I send an important, time-sensitive message or email, my direct report can’t say they didn’t see it when I clearly can tell they DID see it. But that’s not a feature I like for personal communications.

I’ve been on both sides of that laptop. Keeping friends is hard when you’re lazy.

Worse yet is when you send a heart-felt message and get back a one or two word response. “OK.” “me too.” “Yep.”
