With material like this, BC became a strip that was so much about the individual quirks of the characters, that casual readers sometime were lost. I knew some who thought those little cavemen were interchangeable, and complained that they didn’t get the gags.
Hating the letter W, and anything that is spelled with one, is pretty specific. Never mind that prehistoric men didn’t speak English, or have an alphabet. BC left any fealty to the Stone Age behind long before. The bottom line is, only Wiley could play this gag.
