What edition dictionary do I need to get? My fave dictionary (Amer. Herit. 4th Ed.) has gabardine and gaberdine but neither at all reference a sardine.
Don’t see much gabardine around these days. However, back when I started to work in the early 1960’s, I had several pairs of gabardine slacks. I also remember my older brother having a grey gabardine suit for his 8th grade graduation from the school in our coal mining town in Western PA. He was the envy of all who attended. That was about 1950.

Sounds like the sardine was about to lower the boom on his zoot suit.
