My son tried this at around 7 or 8. I let him go at it, till he came to me complaining of itchiness. Did the same with brushing teeth. We compared what happens to food left in the back of the frigifrater (his word) and added that the the warmth of his mouth could incubate any morsels into a third grade science project. Worked like a charm.
