I wonder if this is why my coworker wasn’t allowed near her son when he had a bad injury on the soccer field as a kid – maybe they figured he was already in pain and seeing his mom might make him fall into hysterics?
Back in the 1960’s, I was the math freak in my school. It is actually not direct proportion but inverse proportion. (When one goes up, the other goes down.) Close proximity, no tolerance. At a distance (and in the presence of his macho coach), a lot of tolerance.
