My first spouse (or should I say “next to last”) really disliked visiting with my folks because, she said, they always treated me like a child. After the break up, I realized what they REALLY did was treat me like the one they trusted and her like the one they had to be careful around. So they just told me what they were thinking… and were thoughtful about what they told her… and she misunderstood (which was symptomatic of why we are now each other’s exes).
