The first five years I lived in Oregon, I got jury duty four times including a grand jury that would have met an hour and a half from my home (got cancelled). It’s been over a decade since I’ve been summoned.
Cops used to be exempt from jury duty. That changed when they decided we could hear civil cases. We never had pay for jury duty in our contract because it wasn’t a thing. One of my partners got summoned, and he told the judge we don’t get paid for jury duty. He said “You have vacation days don’t you?”
The only time I got called, there were 86 of us. They called numbers, and I didn’t get called, there were maybe 20 of us left. Then they asked those who were picked if they had an excuse, and 12 of them were excused. They picked 12 more numbers from those left. I STILL didn’t get picked. Then they asked those 12 if anyone needed to be excused. 2 people were. So they picked 2 more from the 8 of us left. Again I lucked out. So of 86 people, I was one of 6 who didn’t get chosen. The clerk asked to speak to us. She said "You can still VOLUNTEER for jury duty. None of us did…

The judge makes the actual decision, he can throw out the jury verdict if he wants to.

Religious convictions can get you out of jury duty if you don’t think you can render impartial judgement.
