1972: it might be possible that people’s ears were starting to tune into fake, canned laughter, when something was not funny at all. Could be the whole studio audience thing with the fake applause and laugh signs. TVs becoming a bigger part of people’s lives.

For the first time ever, [and maybe the only time] I can agree with Fink. Many a not-quite-funny show was made to seem more popular by fake audience laughter. But the 1950’s introduced a new era and an entertainment medium that came to the viewer and not the reverse. And some shows were actually worth the effort. So it wasn’t a total loss. And compared to the newest crash-bash-trash series one is faced with these days, it wasn’t a totally bad thing.

Let him listen to a laugh sound track 24-7.
