We have an old rotary phone. It works to receive calls but you can’t call out with it because the dial tone times out before you can finish dialing. I don’t know if it is that way in all areas but it is where we live.
I usually ask people in Pam’s position how their Morse code is, but I like their answer more. (I’m sure kids of today could figure it out in the same way we did, but why on Earth would they need or want to?)
The little smartypants doesn’t quite understand the use of the dial phone. With the old Brumberg phones, you had to put your finger at the number position and drag the wheel counterclockwise around till your finger was stopped by the dam. Then you’d release the dial and it would rotate clockwise back to the starting position, thus sending the pulse to select that number. There are some new versions of the dial phone for those that hanker for the retro look that have buttons at the number positions. With these, one can follow little miss smartypants directions and make the phone work.
When we serve coffee to someone and ask “high test or unleaded?” they know immediately what we are asking.
In a decade or so all cars will be electric. By the time today’s infants are old enough to drink coffee, if we aske them “high test or unleaded?” they won’t know what the heck we are talking about.
Can anyone remember those old fashioned Voice Activated phones? You lifted the ear piece and when it said “Number please”, you just spoke it into the mouthpiece and got connected.

Ha, ha – stupid kids. That smartphone was designed by adults, as were Bluetooth and earbuds.

I want to see them try to use a Windows 95 PC and a phone modem to connect to the internet.

If Pam is a Gen Xer or older Millennial, she should be able to use both the rotary phone and set up her own technology.

I really can’t see all cars being electric in 10 years. Unless we actually do totally run out of crude oil by then.

Is PAM old enough to remember rotary phones?

Cute gag, but with more truth than some of us, myself included, would want to admit.

Hey, after she’s done helping Mom, I need her know-how myself. I don’t have grandkids and I live in a 55+ community. Help!

Can’t use it here. The phone system no longer has equipment to interpret pulse dialing.

I still have a landline. I have 4 phones in the house….one of which is a rotary phone. I can answer incoming call but I can not “dial out”

Ellen actually did this on her show a couple of years ago. The audience member could not figure out how to use the phone.
