“Taking advantage of a glitch” is understating it. Most “speedruns” rely on dozens or even hundreds of specific glitches, many of which require microsecond-reaction times. At this point, breaking records usually requires not only using all known glitches with perfect precision, but discovering some new glitch to exploit.

In some cases, the record may never be broken, as the “glitch” that pushed them over the limit was a rare and truly random/unreplicable phenomenon, like a particle of ionizing radiation flipping a bit at just the right time.
