I sat through three days of jury selection as the lawyers burned through 152 people. The fourth day there were eight people left and the judge told the lawyers that either they picked the last two that day or he would drop the charges. I and one other person walked away free. IIRC the trial lasted one day and the jury voted 12:0 to acquit.
In our county, if you’re due to serve, you get a number, go to work as usual but call in every day. If your number is chosen, then you go to court for the attorneys to squabble over whether or not you get picked to serve. If you don’t get called or don’t get picked, you’re off the hook for the next 5 years. Grand jury is a separate process.
