How do you screw up a flapper replacement that badly? You don’t have to dismantle much of the toilet. Even if you forgot to turn off the intake valve, the water would just be flowing into the toilet bowl and out the drain.
I’ll never forget when the intake valve in the guest bathroom went bad the day before Xmas and guests were coming to stay. 6 trips to the store later and much thinking on what was going on (the previous owners had installed the old one backwards) I finally fixed it minutes before the hardware store closed for the holiday.

For a change you should have taken his advice and called a plumber!

Like i said the other day. Norm knows his dad. He knew if he tried to fix the plumbing problem. That it would end in a disaster.

by the time you pay a plumber, you might as well buy a new toilet.

For that you’ll need to go to a sporting goods store.

Never do plumbing if you don’t know where the water main valve is.
