Rockwell did not paint America as it was but as how we wish it might have been. He used real people for models and parts of America have much of the goodness he pictured, but he left the dwelling on the darker parts of our culture to those insistent on seeing only the flaws.

That’s what makes his art so collectible. Just think how cheap it would be if he were still putting out a painting a week.
