Supposedly Disney is deep-sixing movies 7-8-9, moving them to the non-canonical file and is going to redo them. Hope they actually make something true to the original Star Wars this time.
In all truth I actually kind of liked Jar-Jar. Especially in the battle sequence against the droid army (I am a big fan of that comedy trope of the “bumbling fool” hero.) I think he might have been better received with a couple minor changes. One being the rest of the Gunguns, if they looked a little more dignified it would contrast Jar-jar and show why he was exiled (don’t make the king do that stupid raspberry thing) and the other would be showing him be clumsy and accident prone, but not an idiot with no tact (such as stealing food from the Tatooine market or whipping his tongue out across the dinner table.) And…that’s it really, I think he would have done his job as a comic relief character and had the intended redemption arc of going from exile to war hero with just those minor changes.
The “Phantom Edit” was actually a superior product to the original “Phantom Menace”. If “Edit” had been the major release, I might have fonder memories of the prequels….
I think Jar Jar was just acting the fool, and he’s far more powerfull than one might think. Remember, “To fool your enemies, you must first fool your friends.”
My biggest pet peeve with the re-edited films shows up at the end of Return of the Jedi. We see the spirit forms (or whatever they are) of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda — and Anakin got younger in the afterlife. Very lame.

Jar Jar was a grotesque pack of racist tropes, and I would have loved to see him edited out.

Oddly enough, the first time I saw “The Phantom Menace”, it was that edited version…

In a galaxy full of uptight grim dramatic characters, Jar Jar was a relief.

I think we all thought this was Jason’s work, so that last frame was a surprise. And I LIKED Jar Jar!
