Let’s start with primary sources. If there is a legal document, say a political party’s official platform or a declaration of causes for secession, THAT is real history. If there are transcripts of speeches, that is real history. If there are newspaper articles from the period being studied, THAT is real history. If there are slave auction advertisements or runaway slave ads, that is real history. Why do you automatically run to the rightwing bugaboo of the 1619 project?
