Doc - I know the feeling. I really hated when they quit putting in the cause of death in the obits. At least now, if a family wants to pay a little extra, it can be done. (There was a period of time when they only would run the minimal info for free - no extras allowed at all.) I knew I was getting older when my high school classmates started dying of natural causes.
When I first started reading alumni news from my college, I first checked the marriage column.
Then I began checking births of children and career news.
After that, I would check retirement news.
Now, I just go directly to the obituaries.
Does that tell you how old this plugger is?
I think I’m once again approaching the point where the men “my age” who are dying are getting killed in 125-mph car crashes. The main difference is how much the car cost.
A “Dear Abby” Column told of a woman whose mother would read the obits every, when the lady asked her mother why she read them, she replied “Oh, I just wanted to see who quit smoking” When I came back after living in Vegas for 10 years to San Diego, all my friends were dead.

Pluggers don’t have a page or two of obituaries–they have a whole obituary PAPER.
