The First Amendment, like the other 9 of the Bill of Rights, is a direct reaction to the laws and policies imposed by the Brits on the colonists for many years. One could not get certain jobs if one did not belong, and tithe, to the Church of England, one could be arrested and jailed for being less than praiseworthy speech towards the king. And groups of three or more could not congregate at a street corner or in a park. “In Our Defense” by Ellen Alderman and Caroline Kennedy. Yes, that Caroline Kennedy. Personally I have seen more of the First Amendment giving all sorts of jerks the freedom to be jerks. YMMV
Free.. but irresponsible speech is what’s bringing America to its knees. Toss of a coin to see if it survives then next ~20 years as a beacon of hope or an example of a failed system.
