At age 4, my toes got pinched by a crab while “enjoying” a beach in Florida. At age 5, a fairly large crab grabbed my foot on a beach in Virginia. At age 6, I had my toes pinched and clamped by crabs on a beach in Texas. Along with really bad sunburns each time, and the sand getting into everything, I have since then come to abhor beaches.
I guess I’m the only one with enough OCD to wonder why Hawthorne’s right claw is intermediate in shade (except in panel 6) between the the beach ape’s legs, and, for that matter, why the legs are different shades except in panel 2. If it’s a colorist’s error, it’s remarkably consistent.

He hasn’t worn his trademark tin can, or a shell, for quite some time.

You can always count on Hawthorne in (for) a pinch

I have a stove and pot ready for cooking toe-pinching crabs. I might even add the lemon and hot pepper before cooking.
