Someday those who consider themselves to be âwokeâ will really wake up someday (when they grow up and mature) and realize what idiots they were being.
âto rouse from sleepâ is attested from c. 1300. It has past tense woke, rarely waked (and that usually in the transitive sense) and past participle waked, rarely woke or woken. Related: Waking.
These usage guides for awake, awaken, wake, waken are distilled from those in Fowler and Century Dictionary:Wake is the ordinary working verb; it alone has the sense âbe or remain awakeâ (chiefly in waking). The modern usage of the word âwokeâ is an aberration and social construct â as is much of the ideology used today. Yes, Papa Dog woke up this morning.
Itâs hard to figure out what anyone means by âwokeâ anymore. It originated around a century ago in the Black community as a survival tactic, meaning be aware of and alert to racial prejudice and discrimination, possibly from the writings of Marcus Garvey in 1923.
The phrase âstay wokeâ turned up as part of a spoken after-word in the 1938 Lead Belly song âScottsboro Boys.â In 1962, âwokeâ was used in an opinion piece as an example of how white Americans incorporate Black vernacular.
In 2014, following the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, âstay wokeâ suddenly became the cautionary watchword of Black Lives Matter activists trying to make people aware of the specific problems of brutality and racial bias in police tactics.
Since then, âwokeâ has evolved into a single-word summation of leftist political ideology, centered on social justice politics and critical race theory. [CRT: Social movement and loosely organized framework of legal analysis based on the premise that race is not a natural, biologically grounded feature of physically distinct subgroups of human beings but a socially constructed (culturally invented) category, inherent in the law and legal institutions.]
This framing of âwokeâ is bipartisan: Itâs used as a shorthand for political progressiveness by the left, and as a denigration of leftist culture by the right. On the right, âwokeâ bespeaks âpolitical correctnessâ gone awry, and the term itself is usually used sarcastically.
In other words, what people actually mean when they use the term âwokeâ now is totally unclear â even when it is used insultingly or sarcastically, one canât be sure what the user is actually ridiculing.
âWokeâ is about controlling other people. Like making them use different pronouns which they can arbitrarily change from day to day. I refuse to grant them any power over me.

This plugger does not know what that other âwokeâ is all about. Tried to read up on it, but the eyes glaze over.
