I believe that Putin considered Gorbachev a loser, not a maniac.

That should be a mirror he’s looking at, then the thought bubble would be true.

It didn’t take long for the Russians to revert to their “good old days.” I hope the USA can learn to do better.

The dissolution of the USSR under Gorbachev and him not fighting it led to Putin’s determination to recreate it in some form and Russia’s present day aggression.

And standing firmly behind Putin is the Russian Orthodox Church, with their gold-laced robes, tall hats and their incense burners. Not pc, but true. And how many American Church leaders condemned Trump for his actions? Too few to matter.

Very sad that Putin decided to go backwards to “the good old days” instead of moving forward. Russia had a bright future until he turned back

Gorbachev just realized that the USSR could not go on in its present situation. Hopefully, Putin will come to the same conclusion in time.

I read today that a Russian oil exec “fell from a window” at a hospital he was staying in and died. May be ruled a suicide. Stalin would just have people shot. Putin likes to take the sneaky route of poisoning or staged suicide.

This points out the failure of a government that is too dependent upon a single leader rather than principally upon a fully-functional representative legislature, congress, or parliament.

You cannot force countries to want to be part of your neo-USSR (example Ukraine) and expect it to hold together, ever. The hard part of leadership is getting those target countries to actually want to be a member state.

As a youth (in the ’50’s) I would never have guessed that some day I would trust the leader of the Soviet Union more than I trusted my own president.
