Half the senior boys, most of the teachers, and some of the girls took guns to school when I was young, especially in autumn. They left them on the rack in the pickup truck. My great grandfather once got a whipping for forgetting to take his rifle to school to protect the little kids.
Time was that schools were multi-storied fortresses with chain linked fences topped with barbed wire. But, along came the idea that schools should be an extension of home so schools became single storied and inviting atmospheres of joyous learning.
The thing about police precincts is that nobody INside cares what happens on the OUTside. The neighborhood I lived in many years ago had a bi-monthly shooting within sight of the precinct building and it STILL took cops an hour or more to show up.

Jr High (1974-76) I went to was hyper security conscious. Chained and locked all the exit doors to prevent students from leaving.Times have changed.

The police precinct doesn’t need a lot of security, because it’s full of armed officers.

I think the guard towers were a nice touch.

I went to the ER in total heart block (heart rate of 37) and I still had to go through the metal detector!

With all the shootings going on lately, I’m surprised Joe isn’t commending schools for trying to make it a safer learning environment.
