My dad’s first language was Norwegian. As an adult, he spoke English. He could read in several other Germanic language, but admitted to me that he had to translate German to Norwegian before translating it to English. Similarly, I have a friend who writes stories in Marathi and then translates them to English.

My husband’s first language is not English. I always wonder if he dreams in German. He never remembers when I ask him.
