I believe this strip takes place in Baltimore. In the early 60s there was a pet cemetery in the Baltimore suburbs. I think it was called the Putty Hill pet cemetery. I worked for an area veterinarian at the time, and every once in a while the old guy who owned the pet cemetery would come by to pick up a deceased pet which I would carry out to his vehicle. He always gave me a tip and invariably said, “here, buy yourself a pack of cigarettes.” I’ll never forget the cemetery’s brochure: on the front there was a soulful headshot of a Boston terrier above script that said, “A Tug at the Heartstrings.”
