Printed maps be useful where there be poor or no network.

Why take a picture when you already have it in your hand ?

You’re a Plugger if you still have a car door map pocket full of road maps. GPS maps and directions can be wrong and you can’t verify them if you don’t have a paper copy. A young family just got rescued in the first winter storm of the year because their GPS took them down the wrong road and they got stuck. Happens several times each year.

An app tells you how to get somewhere. A map shows you where you are and what’s around you.

Why would he take a digital picture of a paper picture?

Smartphone. I do believe that I’ve heard speak of those. :)

The reason for taking a picture on the phone is that it’s easier to handle than a paper map. And you can enlarge it. I have never found an online map “service” that wasn’t a nightmare. Some red pointer thing in the middle of some streets, half of which aren’t even named. Fortunately, I don’t go very far afield nowadays, lol.

To make an interesting idea, when you need to use your maps app to get directions to an unknown location, once you have it positioned in the app to see where you’re going, take a screenshot of it and set it as your phone’s lockscreen.
