There is some truth to this. I myself have found it harder to find instances to really meet and interact with new people long enough to actually make new friends of them these days now that I’m an adult. Mix in the fact that I don’t drink, and thus happy hour does nothing for me, and I’m left with scant few opportunities to be meeting people, at least outside of work, but that depends entirely on the nature of your job.
I think it’s because once you become an adult, you’re not under obligations to be constantly grouped with others of your age as much anymore, so the opportunities to do so just aren’t as numerous, and as a result, less opportunities to make friends.

Similar interest couples friendships are actually rare. Most cases a spouse gets dragged along to alpha spouse’s friends.
