Umm, Lillian, you were just performing “Jazz Messiah” with the Bedside Manor band back in December, and there were people looking at you. And if you don’t want to sing “in front of an audience,” what on Earth do you need the furshlugginer ROBES for!?
That’s because choirs are to be part of the congregation, as it were. No one in a church is performing for the congregation or each other: They are instead showing their worship to God. In a theater or in a concert hall, it’s different.
It makes about as much sense as the whole idea that some random church choir would have any reason at all to be performing at a music educators’ conference, instead of the choir or glee club from one or more of the high schools that are participating in the conference.
If she says she doesn’t feel they’re ready, when are they going to GET ready?! And she’s no spring chicken! She’d better grab at the opportunity while can because there are many, many choirs waiting for the chance!
I don’t remember Crankshaft like this, but if you have a great voice, you should be happy to proudly share it with the world. I can’t even fake one note myself.

Maybe the audience will be asleep by the time you sing.

That’s right, Ms. Lizard! If the congregation had to look at your group, attendance would drop like a rock. Some scary things need to be to be hidden.
