I used to be a paid pallbearer for a local funeral home. The assistant funeral director, my co-pall bearers, and I started to yuck it up in a back room during a service and the “boss” had to come hush us. I am with you Lio - death is too serious not to laugh!
At my grandmothers funeral, the ignorant preacher started talking about what a kind and simple woman she was. The whole family cracked up remembering the rum running, nightclubbing flapper she was.
When my mom passed a couple of years ago, my sisters and I, were making arrangements with the funeral home. We had them ceacking up with the jokes we were making. They said that they really appreciated the way that we dealt with the loss. We explained that we believe that you show respect to the person while they are alive, not when there is no one there to respect.
At my uncles funeral my mother was trying to say a few good things about him while she was holding my baby niece. Who besided that she would stick her head in her grandma’s shirt. Everybody there laughed. My uncle would have loved it.
iamtxmilady I agree completely!
The best funeral I’ve been to was our pastor’s wife’s. Her oldest son told several funny things that happened when he was growing up, but he wasn’t allowed to tell anyone before, because she threatened to kill him if he did. (One of the stories was about when his pet snake got loose during a ladies’ meeting in their house.) The whole crowd was laughing most of the time. (And there were well over 1,000 people at her funeral.)
doctortoon, I’ve almost got the opposite problem. I can draw OK, but have trouble with characters and consistency. I seriously thought about trying it, but couldn’t get my act together.
Maybe you sell yourself short… I think story, humor and character are more important than art. I think Gary Larson and perhaps Scott Addams had trouble with the drawing part, but made up for it by their great humor… and in the meantime their art became better and more consistent.

There are those whose demise would not impart sorrow to my heart.

Of all the places where a child’s laugh might be appreciated, too. How thoughtless.

Respect the dead, Lio. …. though laughing is respecting.

From my father-in-law funeral director:
Gravesite military salute, salute fires, old woman faints, little kid yells: Holy s**t, they shot grandma!

I hope people laugh at my funeral! BTW, doctortoon, do you draw cartoons? I’d like to see ‘em. I draw some, though I don’t publish them.
