It most certainly was decades ago and I still remember McCarthyism (reminder that Roy Cohn was his right hand man and became trump’s lawyer & mentor) and Joseph Welch, the man who finally chastised Joe McCarthy, a republican, with the statement/question: Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
A totally inaccurate analogy. The bomb that could explode the world we know is allowing russia to complete their plan of the neo-USSR reformation in Europe. Ukraine is a “stitch in time”
So Putin may not be the sharpest knife in the block, but he’s not exactly stupid either. It’s no mystery that Putin waited until a weak Democrat president, Obama, got voted into office before he invade Crimea and effectively eastern sectors of Ukraine. While consolidating his new assets, 2016 rolled around and President Trump was seated in the Oval Office. Pretty much from the start Putin knew he had a problem on his hands as he was thwarted in the Middle East and elsewhere. In Syria President Trump took out several “Russian” bases and installations resulting in the loss ove hundreds of millions in equipment, munitions and supplies. Putin’s Wagner mercs in Syria got froggy and tried to take out an installation protected by US troops. Big mistake. The troops fired up the Wagners, called in air support and ultimately wound up killing over 300 Russians with many more wounded. So Putin knew he couldn’t do anything significant while President Trump was in office. Scroll on a few years and Biden is elected. Putin has dealt with Biden before and has got his number. Within a few months Putin begins deploying troops along the Ukrainian border and to the north in Belarus. This goes on until Putin pulls the trigger on February 24, 2022. Putin waited until hapless Joe got in office to launch his invasion but failed to understand that Biden’s handlers were calling the shots.
Note, while I am opposed to Biden and most of his disastrous decisions, I do give him and his handlers credit for their support of Ukraine. His visit to Ukraine was very well done except for the ridiculous air raid sirens going off.
" … Putin waited until a weak Democrat president, Obama, got voted into office before he invade Crimea and effectively eastern sectors of Ukraine."
Really? Obama started in office in 2008, and he waited 6 years to take advantage of that?
You are ignoring the Maidan uprising, where Yanukovych, a Russian puppet, went against the wishes of the Ukrainian people and suddenly turned away from an economic deal with Europe and tried to substitute one with Russia. Over 100 were killed, a number by snipers, and Yanukovych fled to Russia, where he still resides.
It was then that Putin turned away from his failed attempts to co-opt the Ukraine by controlling its government, and resorted to plain old military aggression, with the Crimean invasion and continuous low level warfare in the east.
With Trump, the low grade war in the Donbas continued, but Putin saw some opportunity to return to subversion with a notoriously transactional Trump. Why go to war when you have useful idiots like that to tap?
When that ended in 2020, it was back to the military approach. I’m not sure why it took a full year to crank it up, but given what we see from the Russian military it may have taken that long to even assemble the incompetent force we saw.
^^@gnorth22 – Yeah, Obama took office in 2008. And what happened a few months later? Once Putin saw a strong Republican president Bush, replaced with with a wishy washy Socialist Democrat Obama, he invaded Georgia in August 2008. Do we see a pattern here? Putin used the same pretext in the Ukrainian invasion that he used in Georgia which was that in both cases ethnic Russians were being genocidedly erased. Lies of course but with Ukraine Putin also tossed in that Ukraine, whose President was a Jew Zelenskyy, were NAZIs. Laughable if it wasn’t so horrifically tragic.
You need to take off your ideological blinders, put aside your hatred of President Trump and try to formulate an objective analysis. “Notoriously transactional “? What does that even mean as it makes no sense in the context of which you are using it? Or maybe it does but in opposition to your intent as a transactional leader is one who supports order and structure.
