We trained our kitten to expect a “treat” every morning when she scratched on her scratching post and every morning when we got up there she’d be, patiently waiting. She never in her almost 20 years laid claw on any furniture or rugs.
Mine have used their scratching posts and ONLY their scratching posts since kittenhood. I have very clear, very consistent rules. The posts are tall enough for adult cats at full stretch. The only maintenance they require is that I replace the sisal rope wrap every decade.

Scratching post untouched, of course.

To be fair, mine scratch their post, too. We have to re-cover it. But they also do a number on everything else!

cats don’t like being told what to do

The only reason cats put up with us is because they haven’t learned to work the can opener.

Relabeling is in order here: Scratching Furniture, Scratching Curtains, Scratching Rug, Scratching Screen, Scratching Clothes, Post.

So true! Same with toys-our cat would rather just bat shoelaces around

My two have done a number on my boxspring. My female has demolished both the scratching posts.

My cats never understood the concept of a scratching post. Never!
