A coworker was out on his patio one morning reading the paper and enjoying a cup of coffee when a bird landed on the dry as a bone birdbath. He perched on one end, hopped across the bowl and perched on the other end while squawking up a storm then flew up on the roof and squawked some more. So my friend got up, got the hose, filled the birdbath then sat back down. Sir Bird then flew down, drank, bathed, drank some more the flew back up to the same spot on the roof and sang for a little bit before he flew of. My friend just went back to his coffee and paper and thought, “Yep! Today is going to be a great day!” Tru story!
The sad part is that once squirrels have been (and peed and pooped) in the bird bath water, the birds will not use the bath any more until it is thoroughly scrubbed out with soap and water and rinsed completely clear of both soap and smell.

I leave a dog dish with water in it near the bedroom window. The wife spotted a pair of cardinals dipping their beaks to get a drink.
