It is my understanding that the “Flood” story was so common in ancient Fertile Crescent cultures was because of the influence of Mesopotamian cultures. Mesopotamia, the area between the Euphrates and Tigres rivers, was farmed by these cultures and they had many towns and settlements. Some years the rivers would overflow their banks and bring catastrophic floods. Hence, the “flood” mythologies.
Also there is the possibility that there was a flood that killed everyone except a few. Then from those few, their descendants repopulated to the point that they then began scattering throughout the world. Each group carrying with them their handed down stories of the flood.

End of the last Ice Age it is a Big Melt because so many have mythologized the flooding it was global. Not as bad as it was exaggerated.
