I never saw myself as being very smart in school. Fact was, I pretty much hated school. But, when I was applying for college, I had to take the SAT. I scored right near the top in my high school class. A fact that startled most of the A students.
Sorry, talented and gifted today is what my generation called average. Today you either have the special ed- these kids are already on welfare, the I don’t care and will get by on the minimal-your minimum wage workers, and the talented and gifted- the future of America. In NYC.. Though 70 percent of the students in the city’s school system are Black and Latino, around 75 percent of the students enrolled in gifted classes are White or Asian American. This says that 7.33 out of every 10 White or Asian are in gifted and 2.5 out of every 10 Black or Latino are in talented. Its right there people in Black and White! Ok, tell me I’m wrong!
I work in a school. I see lots of kids who have been placed in “gifted” or “honors” classes, usually by parents vicariously re-living their school days, and who really would do better if they were in the “standard” classes. The kids know it. The teachers know it. But the parents seem to think they’re somehow being called “bad parents” if the kids are placed in the courses where they can thrive, rather than the courses the parents think they “should” be in.
This teacher may have done Nerwin a great service.
We had GATE. Gifted And Talented Enrichment. It was ok. We got out of 2 classes each week. The downside was 3 – 4 hours after school along with it. At the I was more interested in music. After skipping two grades in elementary school I found myself unable to participate as I was in middle school. And then the school district brought it to middle school and made me take it. Thank dog the next year I was able to skip out of it into high school and a different school district.
My wife taught mathematics for years at a “gifted” school & it was always upsetting to tell parents their child was not “gifted”….it was one of the reasons she left to teach at the public schools that needed help.

I once applied for advanced English in high school; I was told I didn’t qualify because my last name is French (Marchand).

Since “gift” has become a verb, maybe we should be asking “gifted to whom”?
