At the beach I worked, before Jaws came out you couldn’t get folks out of the water if you blew the whistle and yelled SHARK. Most completely ignored you. After Jaws came out the same warning would cause full panic just like in the movie!
I live at the beach, in Oregon. Although far north, on the west coast, we do have Great White, and Black Tip Sharks. When the “RED FLAGS” come out, up and down the beach… EVERYONE, (except for those few mentally challenged tourists)…. immediately come out of the water. (there is also a sign, explaining the flags purpose, posted beneath each flag, the flags are 3 X 5 feet). In the summer of 2020, a tourist was bitten on the leg, and fortunately didn’t lose it or her foot. When asked “Why didn’t you come out of the water….. didn’t you SEE the posted red flags?” Her answer?? “Yes, I saw them, but I wanted a super cool selfie!!!”

He’d better hope the next emergency item is really only a Baby Ruth.

This was a drill, this was only a drill. Were it the real thing, you would have seen the lifeguard running in panic.
