I wonder how many people read the book. Dr Jekyll made the solution to extract his evil side so that he could be all good. initially Mr Hyde was much smaller than Dr Jekyll but as he exercised his evil, he grew to be the same size and was able to force the transformation even without the solution. He did not grow bigger than Jekyll. He did not turn into a physical monster, just a mean nasty person.
It is a commentary on how not battling the evil in yourself allows that evil to grow stronger and takeover your life.
