Am (half) French. Can confirm tipping does not exist whatsoever over there and that the cheese, while certainly pungent, tastes INCREDIBLY good!!

I just read this amazing essay from a business owner that takes about wealth equality. She pointed out that it actually costs the government a great deal of money for business to not pay a living wage because the government subsidizes what business doesn’t pay. I admit that I never thought about it in that direction before.

I live in France, there is not mandatory tipping BUT when I am very happy with a restaurant, I do give 10% . In cash, obviously .

And of course one NEVER hears about French citizens complaining about wages or any economic policies…right??

At a restaurant in Guatemala the hostess would find out where everybody was from and place the matching National flags on the table. I thought it was nice, later learning it was so the locals would not try to rob us and the waitstaff would forgive us for being stupid idiots. And that wasn’t a bad idea!

I was impressed with the table that had 14 different flags for 18 people.

I was in Paris in 1984, and I can tell you the taxi drivers would go nuts if you rounded down their tip.
